Talk to me

Subcontractors are a quiet bunch. If there are two ways of doing something, they are not going to ask you, even if it takes a minute. They'd rather assume what you want or do it their way. I already mentioned how the granite subcontractor messed up the holes in the kitchen countertop. It would've only taken a few seconds to ask:

- Do you really want one hole at 8" off center and another at 10"?
- No, I want them both at 8".
- Ah, okay, it's good I asked.

Or take the plumber who installed my shower system.

There are two ways to attach the bottom mount: the default option using self-adhesive or by screwing it into the tile. I'd prefer using the adhesive because if my relationship with this particular shower system doesn't work out, I can always replace it without much trouble and move on with my life. It would also be easier to install (no need to drill holes, etc.). Do you think they bothered to ask? Nope. So, now, I can only hope that this marriage lasts.

Lessons learned: Do not assume that contractors will know what you want, don't expect them to ask you, tell them about every minor thing you want to be done in advance before they have a chance to do it the wrong way. Then you won't have to marry your shower head.
